How to Renew an Expired Passport (in a Hurry!)

You’ve been counting down for months, and that dream vacation is finally here. Your out-of-office reply is on, bags are packed, dog sitter is set, and paradise is waiting for you in just a few short days. But wait. What if your passport isn’t valid or has expired?

Did you know that the U.S. Department of State actually recommends that passports be valid for at least six months after the expected return date – and some foreign destinations require it? If you’re on top of your game and planning ahead, you can get a new or renewed passport in approximately 6-8 weeks, either by mail or by visiting a passport location. However, you might not always have the luxury of that much time. Luckily, there’s no need to panic.

If you are traveling soon (like tomorrow – gasp!), here’s how to get your passport renewed in a hurry:

Step 1:

First, contact the National Passport Information Center (1-877-487-2778) to make an appointment at the nearest Passport Agency. If it is after hours, you can call first thing in the morning to make the appointment.

Note: only limited walk-ins accepted, so it is recommended to make an appointment if possible.

Step 2:

Make sure you’ve got everything you need for your scheduled appointment. Here’s a quick list:

  • Your completed passport form(s). (Note: there are different forms, so be sure to complete the correct one.)
  • A passport photo. You will need a photo that meets requirements as outlined by the U.S. State Department. You can get a photo taken at places like the Post Office, Fed Ex, Walgreens, or CVS within an hour.
  • Payment for passport fees. The expediting fee at the National Passport Center is $60 (plus the regular $135 application fee if you’re getting a new passport or $110 if you’re renewing an expired one).
  • Your most recent passport. If your name has changed, you’ll also need a certified copy of your marriage certificate or court order of your name change.
  • Proof of travel. In order for passport expediting to take place, you need to have valid proof of international travel. Depending on the timing of your last-minute passport request, this can include your boarding pass (printed or mobile) or your travel itinerary.

Passports expire every five years for children 16 years of age and under, so if you’re renewing a passport for a child, you’ll need a few extra things, too:

  • The child’s birth certificate (not a copy).
  • Both parents. Both legal parents need to be present to give consent that a passport can be issued to anyone under the age of 16. (Note: there are forms that can be completed before an appointment if both legal parents are unable to attend.)

Step 3:

Attend the appointment. The passport agent will advise how long the processing will take. In some cases, you can even get your renewed passport on the same day.

Once you’ve got your passport squared away, go and enjoy a relaxing vacation – you deserve it!
