Josh Haroldson: A One Sentence Guide to Making Vacation Dreams Come True

Congratulations, if you’re reading this you’re currently winging your way towards somewhere fun (or at least hoping to do so in the near future)! And whether you’re waiting to cruise 30,000 feet before your flight or just thumbing through your iPhone, you no doubt want your upcoming adventure to be awesome!

How do you make sure the vacation you have is your best vacation ever? Well, I’m going to let you in on a vacation planning secret of mine that only involves writing one sentence. Also, it’s something you can do right now.

Start with your why

Isn’t it amazing how many details and decisions travel involves? What flight are you taking? Where are you staying? Where are you going? For how long? What are you going to do when you get there? Before you know it, you can get so lost in all the decisions about what you’re doing it’s easy to lose sight of why you took the trip in the first place.

That’s why, in one sentence, I want you to write down what your goal for the trip is.

But, don’t just write down what you’re doing or where you’re going. Instead, think about why you’re heading out of town. Essentially, think of the emotions you want to feel and the purpose of all the activities you might do.

For example:

  • If you’re taking a family vacation to Orlando you might write, “I want to create happy memories for our kids we’ll all talk about when we’re older.”
  • Or a romantic beach getaway might inspire you to pen, “I want to relax, laugh, and reconnect with my spouse like when we were newlyweds.”
  • And even if you’re on your way to a conference you could say, “I’m going to meet at least one new person per day and learn about how I can help them achieve a goal.”

From here on out, think of this as your vacation mantra, motto, or mission statement. Remember to actually write it down, bring it with you, and review it often!

The Magic of the One Sentence Goal

Now, you might be thinking there’s no way writing down a goal will guarantee a trip where everything goes to plan. And you’re right! It won’t. You can’t control the weather.

However, the magic of your one sentence goal is there to act as a guide that will help you decide what to do (or not do) on your vacation and how to react to whatever happens (good or bad) on the vacation you actually have.

So again, using our three trips from earlier, let’s determine what you do on your trip:

  • Family Vacation – Your goal might remind you to be on the lookout for silly things you can do as a family that will make all of you laugh or for special experiences you couldn’t do at home instead of watching a movie. And if the weather isn’t perfect, you can use your goal to remember to stay positive and go play in the rain because you’ll definitely be telling that story for years to come.
  • Romantic Getaway – In this case, instead of scheduling one or two long excursions every day, make sure to schedule an entire day at the resort with no excursions at all! It might seem like you’re missing out on something by saying “no” to the dinner cruise, ATV-ing, and parasailing, but if you remember your primary goal is to relax. You’ll be thankful to happily nap by the pool together instead of stressing about making it to the shuttle bus on-time again.
  • Business Conference – Use your goal as permission to skip a discussion panel or mixer you didn’t really want to go to because you’re having a great conversation with a new colleague.

Your One Sentence Guide to Your Best Vacation Ever

To wrap everything up, if you want to make sure you have a vacation you’ll be talking about for years to come:

  • Write down the goal of your trip.
  • Use that goal to determine what you do and don’t do on your trip.
  • Keep the goal in mind to recognize “little” special moments and have a positive mindset when things don’t go according to plan.
