Mardi Gras is the last big party of winter and the perfect excuse to plan a last minute getaway. Whether you’re looking for a huge celebration or something a little quieter, there are plenty of places to laissez les bon temps rouler (let the good times roll).
New Orleans is probably the most popular place to celebrate Fat Tuesday, and for good reason. Parades, parties, Cajun food, and amazing music are what the city is famous for, and there’s no better time to experience the Big Easy.
Looking for something that’s still quite the party, but not ready to join the crowds in NOLA? No problem. San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter hosts one heck of a party, too. There’s a huge masquerade parade and celebration with breathtakingly over-the-top floats, music, and tons of energy.
Every year, Universal Studios Florida™ celebrates Mardi Gras in style with nightly parades, street performers, colorful costumes, and, of course, thousands and thousands of beads. To top it all off, there’s also a concert series featuring big-name acts included with your theme park admission. Check out the full event calendar here.
The City by the Bay kicks off San Francisco Carnaval season each Mardi Gras with celebrations held at 21 different venues across San Francisco’s Mission District. The best part? They are ALL free. You’ll find live samba drummers, street dancers, and live music everywhere.
For something more budget and family friendly, check out the Barefoot Mardi Gras Festival on South Padre Island. Admission is only $5, which grants you access to food trucks, artists, and a kids fun zone. There’s even a King and Queens Ball that takes place on the beach for adults looking to spend the night out. Festivities officially kick off the Saturday before Mardi Gras, so it’s a great weekend activity, too.
Taylor is part of the Communications Team at Sun Country Airlines. What she loves most? Sun Country’s love of all things Minnesota and the airline’s focus on making everyone – from crew to passengers – feel right at home. If she were hopping on a flight tomorrow, she’d be headed west to Portland or south to Puerto Vallarta.
